“…You have to read widely, constantly refining (and redefining) your own work as you do so. It’s hard for me to believe that people who read very little (or not at all in some cases) should presume to write and expect people to like what they have written, but I know it’s true. If I had a nickel for every person who ever told me he/she wanted to become a writer but ‘didn’t have time to read,’ I could buy myself a pretty good steak dinner. Can I be blunt on this subject? If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.

Reading is the creative center of a writer’s life. I take a book with me everywhere I go, and find there are all sorts of opportunities to dip in. The trick is to teach yourself to read in small sips as well as in long swallows. Waiting rooms were made for books — of course! But so are theater lobbies before the show, long and boring checkout lines, and everyone’s favorite, the john. You can even read while you’re driving, thanks to the audiobook revolution. Of the books I read each year, anywhere from six to a dozen are on tape. As for all the wonderful radio you will be missing, come on — how many times can you listen to Deep Purple sing ‘Highway Star’?”

~ Excerpt from Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

”Our senses by themselves are dumb. They take in experience, but they need the richness of sifting for a while through our consciousness and through our whole bodies. I call this ‘composting.’ Our bodies are garbage heaps: we collect experience, and from the decomposition of the thrown-out eggshells, spinach leaves, coffee grinds, and old steak bones of our minds come nitrogen, heat and very fertile soil. Out of this fertile soil bloom our poems and stories. But this does not come all at once. It takes time. Continue to turn over and over the organic details of your life until some of them fall through the garbage of discursive thoughts to the solid ground of black soil.”

“The real journey for a writer isn’t to publication but to your own voice.”

I love this quote from Justine Musk. She shared it yesterday on Twitter. It’s both liberating and intimidating. Why?

Finding our voice never ends. And it’s hard work. Basically, it’s as easy (i.e., difficult) as finding yourself. Knowing who you are. Being OK with that. And revealing yourself to the world.

See what I mean? But it’s also an exciting process filled with twists, turns, triumphs and tribulations. I’m all for that.

Justine delves deeper into the topic of finding your voice in this brilliant post.

She said, “You shouldn’t spend your time growing vegetables. You should spend more time writing poems. Your poems are so beautiful. Everyone can grow lettuce, but not everyone can write poems like you do.”

When asked how to help young readers appreciate poetry, the poet Mary Oliver said, “Emphasize their response in terms of feeling. We give far too much focus to understanding in our educational systems. Don’t ask them what the poem is about. Ask them, ‘How does it make you feel?’”

…

As you read poems, listen to them, and speak them aloud, try meeting them as you would a piece of music. Allow your rational brain to relax. Dare to not understand, to lose your grip on making sense of the words. Let the images, like musical notes, pour over you. The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard writes that poetry “comes before thought…[R]ather than being a phenomenology of the mind, [poetry] is a phenomenology of the soul.”

I write to give myself permission for being me. To embrace my qualities and traits, which, years ago, I barely even knew or disliked or abandoned. To embrace my appearance, which, years ago, I worried didn’t measure up. (To what? I’m not sure.)

I write to remind myself that I don’t need to earn respect and love, like I believed years ago.

I write to give myself the strength and security to walk through life.

I write to exhale. To breathe deeply when hyperventilating seems like the only option.

The poem I wrote for Bentlily was a poem for me. These are the words I needed — and will need — to hear. That sometimes confidence wavers like a leaf in the wind. Sometimes you lose faith in yourself. Acceptance turns to apathy.

But those moments don’t undo who you are.

Just because you’re not fearless, just because there are days when you’re afraid of everything, overwhelmed by everything, you’re still brave. You’re still worthy. You’re still you.

These are the words I need to hear. Over and over. So I wrote them for myself, and hopefully, for people who need to read them, too.

Do you write the words you need to hear?

I want to write a poem.

A petite but poignant poem.

A poem so breathtaking

You stop what you’re doing

To drink my words.

Words that feel urgent

And necessary.

A cold glass of water

After mowing the lawn

Amid an angry sun.

A poem to arouse your senses.

Give your feelings flight.

But that’s not the point.

As a brilliant poet told me

The goal isn’t pretty or perfect.

It’s truth.

Naked, raw, vulnerable.

So, today, that’s what I’ll do.

I’ll tell you about

feeling overwhelmed with writing.

And getting it “right.”

Worried others will see

I’m an amateur.

I’ll tell you about feeling lost

and antsy

about certain parts of my life.

Worried I am stagnant.

I’ll tell you that the worst feeling about loss

is almost getting over it.

Especially when grief arrives

during mundane moments.

When you’re composing a blog post,

listening to a song to coax your creativity

and, without warning, grief twists in your belly

Seeps into your bones.

Memories flood.

And you’re horrified the tears

don’t come as regularly anymore.

You’ve reached no-man’s land

an odd place of acceptance.

Which sometimes feels worse than the early ache of loss.

How do you accept that your father is dead?

Three days before his 58th birthday.

Years before you’ll get married.

Years before his grandkids are born.

Decades before he’s supposed to grow old with your mom.

When you do feel the pain,

you strangely feel better.

Because you’re out of no-man’s land

and into your heart.

Today, this is my truth.

{bubbles in Central Park, NYC}

I miss sharing my favorite posts with you. So here’s a selection, which I hope inspires you! Have a wonderful Sunday.

F. Scott Fitzgerald shares the secret to great writing.

Alex Franzen is one of my favorite writers and bloggers. She’s absolutely amazing with a one-of-a-kind, pops-off-the-page voice. These are her insightful pointers on creating personal introductions and telling people who you are.

Another favorite: How she gets things done.

A heartbreaking, breathtaking look at grief + pain.

How to write without writing.

Beautiful and honest.

A necessary reminder about telling our stories. My favorite part:

Our mistake is in thinking – in being trained to think – that we are separate, isolated, and cut-off; that our experiences, by virtue of being our experiences, aren’t relevant to others; that our stories are of little value. Too confessional. Too self-indulgent.

But when you tell your story, and it resonates with another, a connection is made.

Enough connections grow into community. Or even a movement.

And that is power.

I love learning about new blogs. Here are 15 bloggers to watch in 2013.
